Many
tout the Range Rover and the Hummer H2 as the best 4x4s to be seen, but
what about the four wheel drives that work behind the scenes. The Range
Rover is capable of great things, but how many people are going to take
a vehicle that costs nearly a million ringgit off road? So, we have
come up with a list of five workhorses that you can use and abuse but
still remain faithful for many years to come and then it will continue
to do so for the next owner.
Land Rover Defender
The defender is unmistakably a Land Rover. It's robust all aluminum body
hasn't received many changes over the years. Despite being more than 60
years old, the latest iteration of the Defender still retains the
classic body style and the mechanicals of the original albeit with more
modern electronic systems. Because it's mostly mechanical, there very
few things that can and will go wrong with the Defender, which is why
it's the vehicle of choice for agricultural work.
Toyota Land Cruiser
All though the Range Rover takes top honours for being the most
sophisticated 4x4, the Land Cruiser still holds the title for being the
most reliable SUV ever made. It's rugged build quality and mechanical
reliability has made it one of the most sort after 4x4 vehicles to date.
Over the years the Land Cruiser has moved further and further upmarket
to compete with the Range Rover. As such, if you're looking for a
workhorse, get an older Land Cruiser preferably a 80 Series.
Mitsubishi Pajero
Here in Malaysia, the name Pajero holds more weight than a Defender or
Land Cruiser. The Pajero has been the long standing workhorse for many
government body, civil defence force and Malaysian agricultural worker
for many years. Reliability and versatility have been characteristics of
the Pajero for many years. The latest generation Pajero may not be as
reliable as its ancestors but it still up there with the best of them.
Isuzu D-Max
Unlike the Defender, Land Cruiser and Pajero, the D-max is a relatively
new comer to the 4x4 scene. Isuzu only introduced the D-Max to the world
in 2002 but since then, it has built up a reputation for being a strong
contender in the segment of the market that requires a rugged off
roader that can deal with the toughest terrain and yet keep going. GM
based the Chevrolet Colorado on the D-Max, as it's difficult to fault a
vehicle that has been known to be one tough truck.
Toyota Hilux
Yes, it's the Hilux again. You can't have a top 5 list without having a
Hilux. There is a reason why it is the most stolen vehicle in Malaysia.
It's because the Hilux is powerful, versatile, is good value for money
and is very reliable. The Land Cruiser is a great vehicle, but it is
more expensive to maintain. The Hilux can endure years of abuse but
never complain. Though many would disagree, as good as the Land Cruiser
is the Hilux is simply better.
Tak tahu mana nak pegi dah, ada baik ada buruk nya, ada pro ada contra nya, ada negatif ada positif nya, eh senang citer macam2 ada lah...mcm pakcik astro tu cakap :/
